The VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (VAGLAHS) is seeking a highly skilled & experienced Physician Assistant (PA) to work in our Surgical Services. The PA will be an active member of the surgical team & provide pre-operative, peri-operative, & post-operative care of surgical patients in both inpatient & outpatient setting while working alongside Attending Surgeons, Surgical Residents & students. The PA must have knowledge to effectively identify & diagnosis surgical conditions. Typical duties include but are not limited to: Knowledgeable on how to obtain informed consent Effectively counsel patients on the indications, contraindications, treatment alternatives, risks, benefits, and possible complications associated with surgery. Manage both the typical and complicated post-operative course. Able to identify and initiate treatment for surgical complications. Able to perform complex wound care, wound debridement, suture/staple removal, ordering interventional procedures, initiating antibiotic treatment, and patient education. Provide consultations on surgical patients and may perform minor surgical procedures in addition to providing the day-to-day care of the surgical patients. Administrative duties of the service and assist with outpatient management of surgical clinics. Provide continuity of care to our veterans. First Assist in Surgery Provide care in the outpatient and inpatient setting Perform adequate and thorough H & Ps Perform consultation for surgical patients referred to the service Order and interpret lab and radiographic studies Consult appropriate subspecialties on patient-specific matters Determine candidacy for surgery or other therapies Perform bed-side procedures pertinent to the surgical care of the patient (such as I & D, suturing, wound debridement/ dressing changes, pulling chest tubes and pacing wires, insertion of femoral arterial and venous line, discontinue and manage balloon pumps, etc) Write orders and prescriptions necessary for patient care Make daily rounds to observe and record patient's medical progress, updating, and summarizing medical records, and changing orders when appropriate. Administrative duties pertinent to the service Assist with the management of surgical clinics and continuity of outpatient care.
