The staff nurse promotes mental health through the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of human responses to mental health problems and psychiatric disorders. The staff nurse provides comprehensive, patient-centered mental health and psychiatric care across the continuum of care. Duties for the Registered Nurse on the 148D Acute Inpatient Unit include but are not limited to: Effectively utilizes evidence-based nursing practice for Veterans with psychiatric diagnoses including, but not limited to Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, Chemical Dependence and Co-Morbid Medical Conditions that support the Recovery Model. Demonstrates the ability to care for Veterans with deteriorating physical and mental status to initiate Prevention and Management of Disruptive Behavior, thus requiring an increased level of care. Uses therapeutic techniques to de-escalate Veterans with behavioral and cognitive changes that often times leads to threatening and violent behavior. In the charge nurse role, attends master treatment planning and intermittent team planning when it occurs on the unit. Participates in policy developments for the inpatient mental health unit as requested by the nurse manager. Maintains the Veterans classification of unit privileges and observation status needs as indicated by provider order and Veterans need. Maintains continual monitoring of the Veterans on the unit either by delegating staff or providing this intervention. Assesses the appropriate personal items that Veterans may possess while on the inpatient unit and secures contraband that is not allowed on the unit. Assesses the Environment of Care for risk potentials and actively manages the risk and/or reports the risk to the appropriate discipline. - Follows policies and procedures to provide care to suicidal patients, Mental Health and Medical Emergencies, and non-emergent care issues. Leads didactics and educational groups that support the Recovery Model. Work Schedule: Rotating shifts including nights, holidays and weekends.
